In April 1989, the second Underwater Archaeological Preserve was designated at the site of the Spanish galleon San Pedro. Victim of the 1733 Spanish Plate Fleet disaster, the 287-ton, Dutch-built ship was lost in a hurricane near Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Today, San Pedro rests in a white sand pocket surrounded by turtle grass. The site is one of Florida’s oldest artificial reefs, home to a variety of sea creatures living amidst ballast stones and coral heads.
